"Points of Contact" in Lviv: How Liver Function Is Reflected in the Skin

On October 6, 2026, a conference was held in Lviv as part of the series of innovative events for physicians “POINTS OF CONTACT. At the Intersection of Specialties”, organized by the NGO “Independent Association of Dermatovenereologists and Cosmetologists”.

Key points

  • The central topic was the relationship between liver function and the skin within the gut–liver–skin axis.
  • Nonspecific skin changes may be associated with subclinical systemic inflammation and metabolic disorders.
  • A comprehensive examination was proposed to identify possible causes of dermatological syndromes.
  • Glutathione is an important mechanism protecting cells from oxidative damage.
  • Hepaval® and Hepaval® ASN (L-glutathione + astaxanthin) were presented.

The event brought together specialists in dermatology, allergology, internal medicine and related specialties. The main focus was on an interdisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of patients whose clinical manifestations may be linked not only to local changes but also to systemic processes in the body.

Valartin Pharma was one of the conference partners, supporting an educational initiative aimed at sharing experience among physicians of different specialties and bringing modern scientific approaches into clinical practice.

The liver–skin axis: scientific evidence and practical conclusions

One of the central topics of the event was the relationship between liver function and the skin. This issue was the subject of the presentation “Interaction along the liver–skin axis: scientific evidence and practical conclusions” by Volodymyr Cherniavskyi, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor at the Department of Internal Medicine No. 1 of Bogomolets National Medical University and member of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL).

In his presentation, Professor Cherniavskyi examined the relationships within the liver–skin axis, as well as the broader gut–liver–skin system. This approach makes it possible to consider individual dermatological manifestations in the context of metabolic, immune and other systemic processes.

The liver performs a wide range of metabolic and detoxification functions, so impaired liver function may be accompanied by changes in various organs and systems. At the same time, the close biochemical and immune relationship between the gut, the liver and the skin makes a comprehensive assessment of the patient essential.

Professor Cherniavskyi highlighted the role of subclinical systemic inflammation and metabolic disorders, which may accompany pathological processes in the liver and manifest as nonspecific skin changes.

A comprehensive approach to examination

Therefore, when searching for possible causes of dermatological syndromes, it is advisable to assess the patient comprehensively. The examination approaches presented included:

  • complete blood count and blood biochemistry;
  • lipid profile;
  • glucose and C-reactive protein levels;
  • anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies;
  • abdominal ultrasound.

Glutathione and antioxidant support

Professor Cherniavskyi separately discussed the role of glutathione, an important component of the endogenous antioxidant and detoxification system. Glutathione is involved in neutralizing reactive oxygen species and maintaining cellular redox balance, which makes the glutathione system one of the important mechanisms protecting cells from oxidative damage.

Hepaval®, a glutathione-based product, was also presented.

Professor Cherniavskyi paid special attention to the combined formula Hepaval® ASN, which brings together two components with antioxidant properties:

  • L-glutathione — an important component of the cellular antioxidant and detoxification system;
  • astaxanthin — an antioxidant from the xanthophyll group, capable of interacting with components of cell membranes.

The combination of glutathione and astaxanthin provides comprehensive antioxidant support for the skin and is particularly appropriate in dermatological practice for patients who need restoration and support of epidermal cells in the setting of skin diseases or aggressive drug therapy.

Interdisciplinary dialogue

Participants also showed practical interest in the approaches presented by Professor Cherniavskyi for using these products in inpatient and outpatient practice. The discussion demonstrated that assessing liver function and related metabolic processes may be important not only for gastroenterologists but also for dermatologists, allergists, general practitioners and other specialists.

Valartin Pharma’s participation in the “POINTS OF CONTACT. At the Intersection of Specialties” conference was another step in its support for professional educational initiatives that foster interdisciplinary thinking and the integration of modern scientific approaches into everyday clinical practice.
